‘Fernando’ is the first single by Swedish pop group ABBA that was not taken from an album. It was released in the spring of 1976 with Anni-Frid Lyngstad on lead vocals. The song did appear on the 1976 re-release of ‘The Best of ABBA’ and on a 1976 double compilation album called ‘The Very Best of ABBA’. It was not originally an ABBA song, but was written for ABBA member Lyngstad. It appeared on her 1975 album Frida ensam. The song was written by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson. The original Swedish lyrics were written by ABBA’s manager Stig Anderson and attempt to comfort the narrator Fernando with his broken heart, because he has lost his great love. The English version has rewritten lyrics by Björn Ulvaeus and a nostalgic image of two veterans reminiscing about the past, about a war of independence in which they both fought when they were younger. The arrangement was written by Frank Bernaerts.
