“Comment Te Dire Adieu” is a song by Françoise Hardy released on her seventh French album of the same title (1968). It is an adaptation of the American song “It Hurts To Say Goodbye”, written by Jack Gold and Arnold Goland and first recorded in 1966 by Margaret Whiting on her album The Wheel of Hurt. British singer and actress Vera Lynn also recorded the song in 1967. But it was an orchestral version, recorded in 1967 by composer Arnold Goland, who inspired Françoise Hardy to adapt it into French. Her manager at the time contacted Serge Gainsbourg, who agreed and wrote the lyrics for this syncopated instrumental song. The song was released in France in late 1968 and topped the charts in early 1969. The arrangement was written by Jan van Kraeydonck.
